Presentation on Charlotte Whitton
Author and retired journalist Dave Mullington presents “Seeking Charlotte’s Soul”, describing his ongoing research into the life of Charlotte Whitton, the colourful first woman mayor of a Canadian city and mayor of Ottawa for nine controversial years in the 1950s and 1960s.

The presentation will explore the subject of telling the stories of the pioneer families of a village, a community or a whole neighbourhood that today forms part of the large City of Ottawa. Robert Serré has published seven books on the pioneer families of Gloucester.

Homes, Gardens and History” – Part I, Researching Your House and Garden: A workshop at the Billings Estate
Historian Bruce Elliott will explain how to trace the history of your house, and landscape historian Edwinna von Baeyer will describe how you can create a heritage garden. Weather permitting, participants will then tour the grounds of the Billings Estate.

“Homes, Gardens and History” – Part II, Heritage and Home in Sandy Hill: 321 Chapel
Family historian John Heney will share stories of this residence of his ancestor (a merchant), and heritage conservation advisor Andrew Jeanes will discuss the process of heritage designation. Weather permitting, participants will then view the exterior of the building and neighbouring properties.

Paul Kitchen, an Ottawa hockey historian, presents Our Royal Winter Game: The 125th Anniversary of Hockey in Ottawa. From kids on the river ice to the vice regal entourage at Rideau Hall, Ottawans of every stripe in hockey’s early days got involved in what would become Canada’s official winter sport.
