John Heney is an outstanding advocate for Ottawa history and heritage spending untold time and energy as a volunteer on historical and heritage pursuits. John is the founding and current president of the Friends of the City of Ottawa Archives, which has since 2003 been promoting proper facilities for the City’s extensive internal documents and invaluable community holdings. A permanent home is finally in sight. This facility will stand as a major cultural force in the city for generations to come – sustaining sound City governance, civic history and community heritage. Archives Awareness Week: April 7-13, 2008

WHEREAS, the rich history of the City of Ottawa and the nation’s capital is held in safekeeping in the City Archives and other local Archives; and

WHEREAS, the City of Ottawa desires that its residents share in the enjoyment and use of the significant City Archives collection, soon to be housed in a new facility; and  

WHEREAS, various Archives in Ontario celebrate “Archives Awareness Week” in April; and

WHEREAS, the City of Ottawa recognizes its Archives as critical to preserving our heritage and creating a legacy for future generations;

THEREFORE, I, Larry O'Brien, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, do hereby proclaim
